How We Work

We are funded primarily by charitable grant-awarding bodies such as the National Lottery and we rely heavily on volunteers in the community to support our activities.

We fully appreciate that times are hard but if you have any free time and would like to help us continue to provide activities and events for our community then please get in touch via our Contact Us page.

Or if you can contribute financially you can make a donation directly via the button below. Just £1 per week can make all the difference.

Our Village

From early times there was an Anglo Saxon settlement next to a large marshy area in the North West corner of what we call Herefordshire, but it didn't become Wigmore until the Normans came to Britain in 1066. Wigmore was to become the seat of power for the powerful Mortimer family for the next 250 years. During this time the settlement built to a village and then to a market town but it remained the centre of the area with its dominant castle to enforce its power. The Mortimers effectively ruled England from here at the end of the 14th century.

The village began to decline in size from the 1600s when the castle was slighted in the English Civil Wars. In the census of 1870 there were 499 souls in the village — about the same as today.

As the Wigmore Glacial Lake of 20,000 years ago progressively drained it became extremely fertile, hence the landscape of the area lends itself to agriculture and forestry, the principal local industries.

And while some aspects of the village may have changed over the centuries, a knight in Roger Mortimer's retinue would still find his way about today!
